Volunteer Programs

Volunteer engagement can strengthen an organization’s capacity and commitment to LGBTQ access within the broader communities it serves. In addition to filling functional roles in service delivery, program support, fund development, and other operational activities, volunteers serve as ambassadors of an organization’s mission and programs in the broader community.

Organizations should consider how volunteer recruitment strategies, training and educational opportunities, and coordination practices can help attract LGBTQ community members to volunteer and equip all volunteers to invest in the commitment to LGBTQ access.

Questions To Ask

  • Does the volunteer program engage participation from the communities that access services and programs?
  • Does volunteer training equip volunteers to uphold organizational values and standards of practice?
  • Are volunteers notified of the organization’s commitment to LGBTQ access?
  • Are volunteers screened for potential bias against LGBTQ people or other groups?
  • Are openly LGBTQ-identified people engaged with the volunteer program?
